Giza prosecutors ordered on Sunday the detention of three leading members of the 6 April Youth Movement for four days on charges of calling for protests and “joining a terrorist organisation.”
The prosecution accused Sherif El-Rouby, the April 6 spokesperson, Ahmed Ramdan and Amr Ezz of calling for protestsagainst the recent announcement by the government that it was acknowledging Saudi sovereignty over two Red Sea islands under Egyptian control.
It is unclear which terrorist organisation prosecutors are referring to; although 6 April was banned in 2014, it has not been officially labelled a terrorist group.
The group’s founders, Ahmed Maher and Mohamed Maher, and its current coordinator Amr Ali are currently serving three-year sentences for breaking the country’s controversial protest law.
Political parties and movements, including 6 April, are calling for protests on 25 April, which marks Sinai Liberation Day.
