Elections commission proposes timeline for 21 November vote

The recently formed Supreme Elections Commission presented the prime minister with proposed dates for a three-stage election process to begin in late November


The Supreme Elections Commission (SEC) has proposed dates for the parliamentary elections to Prime Minister Essam Sharaf.

The committee suggested having the People's Assembly (Lower House) elections in three stages, including run-offs.

The first stage will be held on 21 November 2011 followed by the second stage on 7 December 2011.

A run-off will be held on 14 December 2011, and the third stage will be on 27 December 2011 with run-offs taking place on 3 January 2012.

According to the proposal, the final results of the parliamentary elections will be announced in the first two weeks of January 2012.

The SEC also suggested having the Shura Council(Upper House) elections in 3 stages, along with the run-offs.

The first stage will be held on 22 January 2012, while its run-off will be on 27 January 2012. The second stage will take place on 7 February 2012 with its run-off on 14 February 2011.

The third stage will be held on 26 February 2012 with run-offs on 4 March 2012.

The Cabinet will discuss this proposal in its meeting next Wednesday.
