Egypt's navy saved 31 migrants earlier on Monday and transported them to Alexandria after their boat capsised in the Mediterranean, Ahram Arabic News website reported.

The 31 people, including 26 Egyptians, were handed over to an Alexandria police station in order for legal procedures to be undertaken.

A fishing boat carrying approximately 600 migrants capsised 420 km away from Alexandria and 160 km away from Greece.

Nine decomposed bodies were also retrieved from the sea where one body was identified as an Egyptian woman while the rest of the bodies are suspected to be for African migrants.

According to the UN, between 700-900 people died in the Mediterranean in their attempt to reach Europe in the last week in May, making it one of the worst and deadly weeks in the current migrant crisis.
