The commercial theatre play, Ahlan Ramadan, features Egypt's young star Mohamed Ramadan

Egypt's star Mohamed Ramadan announced on his Facebook page on Wednesday that the commercial theatre play Ahlan Ramadan, in which he performs in, has exceeded EGP 1 million revenue in the first 10 day of performances. The comedy musical play, directed by Khaled Galal, is staged twice a week.

Alongside Ramadan are other known actors such as Rogina, Ahmed Fouad Selim, Shaymaa Seif and Hossam Dagher.

The play is written by Walid Youssef, with music by Amr Mostafa and choreography by Atef Awad.

The popularity of the play has already been evident since the first few days of the performance. Earlier this month producer Emad Ziada published a press release saying that the new play gained the highest revenues within a very short time span, quoting EGP 210,000.

Mohamed Ramadan's career skyrocketed in recent years and his latest television series titled Al-Ostoura increased his renown and created a controversy among audiences and critics.

Al-Ostoura’s popularity became a social phenomenon with many young people imitating the look of El-Dessouky, the protagonist played by Ramadan, to the extent of copying the character’s behaviour, including his aggressive attitude and insults.

Ramadan's starring in Ahlan Ramadan at Al-Haram theatre is an additional recognition of the young artist topping the popularity charts. The play's success also revived the commercial theatre stage that in the past housed a few well-known plays starring Adel Emam, such as El-Wad Sayed El-Shaghal (Sayed the Servant Boy) in the eighties, Al Zaeem (The Leader) from 1993 to 1999, followed by The Bodyguard.

The theatre was then closed due to a lack of patronage before Ramadan graced its stage and it is now that it witnesses it's reopening and the great success of Ahlan Ramadan.
