The divided 6 April youth movement’s Ahmed Maher Front issued a statement on Thursday in response to yesterday’s press conference on the recent Maspero clashes convened by Egypt’s ruling military council.

The statement described the council’s press conference as “misleading” and demanded that the military carry out its role of protecting Egypt and the Egyptian public. The movement also questioned exactly who opened fire on Maspero protesters if military police were not armed with live ammunition, as was claimed by military officials at the Wednesday press conference.

The movement went on to point to video footage posted online showing military police violently cracking down on unarmed protesters.

It also demanded the dismissal of Minister of Information Osama Heikal, who, it claimed, had spread false information about the clashes and incited civil war. The movment further demanded that all military police involved in running over protesters with military vehicles – including Military Police Commander Hamdy Badeen – be referred to investigation.

The group concluded its statement by saying that it did not plan to participate in demonstrations slated for Friday to express solidarity with the victims of the bloody clashes.

After playing a prominent role in Egypt’s January revolution, the 6 April youth movement split into two distinct factions, the Ahmed Maher Front – named after the group’s founder – and the Democratic Front.
