The preacher delivering the Friday sermon in Tahrir Square demanded that all member of the Mubarak regime be punished and the Treason Law applied to ensure none take part in Egypt's political scene.

The preacher, Sheikh Mazhar Shaeen, who has come to be knownn as the “revolution’s preacher” for delivering the sermon at most of the Friday protests in Tahrir Square since the revolution began, was addressing about 1,000 protesters who were demonstrating in the square as part of the “Friday of Defending the Revolution.” Shaeen said that the January 25 revolution was triggered to purify Egypt from all corruption and that hundreds were martyred for this cause. He added that the smell of the blood of martyrs, both Muslims and Christians, still permeates the square and it is the duty of revolutionaries to bring justice for them.

He added that members of the old regime, and specifically those who were part of the now dismantled National Democratic Party (NDP), need to be banned from political life and the Nasser-era Treason Law needs to be applied administered to punish them. Shaeheen added that members of the old regime have been participating in meetings with officials to discuss Egypt’s future, an act which he slammed as “disgraceful.”

He also asked revolutionaries to launch awareness campaigns to educate people about the NDP and investigate if any of its members are running for the upcoming parliamentary elections set to start on 28 November.
