An Egyptian court ruled on Tuesday that the Qatari Al-Jazeera news channel owes EGP 5 million in compensation to Egyptian photographer Essam Deraz for using without permission images he took of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

The photographer said in his lawsuit, filed in 2014, that the news channel broadcast and sold his photo archive to several international news agencies without permission.

The Egyptian photographer also accused Al-Jazeera of stealing his exclusive archive that documents the war between Afghanistan and the Soviet Union in the 1980s.

Deraz said during a TV interview in 2011 that much of the material he had filmed in Afghanistan was leaked abroad after it was seized by Egyptian authorities upon his arrival to Egypt in the 1990s.

Deraz said in a 2015 interview with the Saudi Asharq Al-Awsat Saudi newspaper that he wasthe first journalist to take a photograph of Bin Laden in Afghanistan in 1989.
