Ahram Online, Monday 3 Apr 2017
The play is directed by Ahmed Saleh, and will be performed in several languages

The Gentleman Caller (also known as The Glass Menagerie) by renowned American playwright Tennessee Williams will be staged at Alexandria’s Bibliotheca Alexandria for five days starting 11 April, followed by five days at Cairo’s Falaki Theatre.

Directed by Ahmed Saleh, the play features an international cast, starring Egyptian actor Ahmed Mostafa, alongside Spanish actress Yolanda Hurtado, French-American actor Paul Spera, and Mexican-American actress Marialusa Burgos.

The Gentleman Caller was a the title of a short story and a screenplay written by Williams, which was the basis for his all-American classic, The Glass Menagerie (1945).

Saleh presents a contemporary multi-language version of The Glass Menagerie play, performed in French, Spanish and Arabic.

The play centers on a family, with each member speaking a different language, as they seeks to find a suitor (a gentleman caller) for their daughter, so the rest of the family members can pursue their dreams. At some point they all try to speak in English, trying to reconcile their differences.

The play also includes video art by French artist Stephane Pachot.

The project was co-produced by El-Madina Arts, an Alexandria based organisation for supporting arts and culture projects by offering trainings, production, and management for cultural spaces.

Programme:
The play runs from 11 to 15 April at 7pm
Small Theatre, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria

From 20 to 23 April
Falaki Theatre, 24 Falaki St., Downtown, Cairo
