Members of Mubarak's now dissolved ruling party, the NDP, have been banned from running in upcoming parliamentary elections in a crucial ruling by the Dakahlia governorate's foremost court

The High Administrative Court in the capital city of the Dakahlia governorate, Mansoura, has sent shockwaves across the country with a landmark ruling that banned all members of the former National Democratic Party from running for Parliament in the upcoming elections which will kick-off on 28 November.

The ruling which was issued Thursday evening stipulated that the General Electoral Committee in the governorate of Dakahlia, should reject the nomination papers of any candidate who was a member of the NDP.

The NDP, which dominated Parliament during ousted president Hosni Mubarak's three-decade long rule, was dismantled last April.

It is not yet clear how the new ruling will be applied, as the candidacy registration period ended on 24 October. It is also not clear if the ruling will apply only to the governorate of Dakahlia or across Egypt.
