Suarez scores four and Uruguay beats Chile 4-0

Luis Suarez scored all four goals as Uruguay stayed on top of South American World Cup qualifying with a 4-0 home win over Chile on Friday

Uruguay played the match without injured top striker Diego Forlan, but Liverpool’s Suarez took up the slack and scored in the 42nd, 45th, 67th and 73rd.

Uruguay has seven points from three matches and is solidifying its spot as the best team in South America. Uruguay won the Copa America—the continental championship—earlier this year and finished fourth in the 2010 World Cup, the best performance among South American teams.

“The important thing is the three points,” Suarez said. “I scored four goals a couple of times when I was play with Ajax, but this is the first time with the national team.”

Chile has three points from three matches and is struggling under Argentina-born coach Claudio Borghi, who suspended five players just days before the match, all accused of staying out late. Borghi said the five were under the influence of alcohol when they arrived for a practice session.

The five were widely reported to have been Gonzalo Jara, Arturo Vidal, Jean Beausejour, Carlos Carmona and Jorge Valdivia.
