On the occasion of the Arabic Novel gathering, which took place in mid-December, the Supreme Council for Culture has published three documents commemorating the centennial of Naguib Mahfouz.

The issue contains two main topics: Mahfouz and History, and Readings across Time. The first tackles the relationship between Mahfouz and history undertaken through a number of academic studies, prepared by writers and researchers, in connection with his historical books such as Thebes, the Trilogy and others.

The second topic deals with the concept of time for Mahfouz.

Other sections in the periodical include discussions on “Visions and Comparisons”, “An unpublished interview with Mahfouz” and finally “The Mahfouz library”, and includes a number of reviews of books about Mahfouz.

The Supreme Council for Culture in cooperation with Al-Dar Al-Masreya Al-Lebnaneya has published a new book by Gaber Asfour entitled, “Naguib Mahfouz: The Symbol and the Value.” In its introduction, Asfour writes that he “has written a lot about the world of Naguib Mahfouz and his critics over the last quarter-century. I wanted to collect everything I had written in one book, as my tribute to Mahfouz with a detailed study of his views on the world.”



Rehlet Omr ma’ Naguib Mafouz (A Lifetime with Naguib Mahfouz), Youssef El-Sharouny, Cairo: Supreme Council for Culture, 2010. pp 267

Finally Youssef Al-Sharouny has collected all his writings on Naguib Mahfouz and published it in “A Lifetime with Naguib Mahfouz”, which contains previously published studies relating to Mahfouz. Unfortunately, this collection has resulted in an incoherent mix.
