Art Alert: Taiwanese choreographer presents Ghareeb dance performance at Darb 1718
Shao Chen Yu (Asad) is based in Taiwan and visits the Middle East every year, collecting stories to reflect in his performances
Taiwanese choreographer Shao Chen Yu (Asad) combines oriental dance styles such as baladi, folk, saidi, khaleeji with contemporary dance.
He performed his latest dance performance, titled Ghareeb in Taiwan, and now in Egypt presents a new version of it with two Egyptian artists, actor Osama Khalil and table musician Mario Salib.
Ghareeb took three years to complete and was born out of Asad’s experiences staying in a Middle Eastern country, including Egypt for two months each year since 2010, listening to people’s stories.
The dance also aims to reflect Middle Eastern heritage, issues in the community, and people who feel marginalised, and the struggles of the youth.
His previous 2013 performance titled Midan Tahrir was completed with stories gathered while visiting Egypt during the 2011 revolution and living near Tahrir Square.
