Ghana announce squad for redundant World Cup qualifier against Egypt
Ahram Online, , Wednesday 1 Nov 2017

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has called up a powerful squad to face Egypt in the last round of the African qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup, despite no hope of getting through to the tournament.

Egypt are already guaranteed to qualify from Group E, where they are top with 12 points, four before second-placed Uganda – who are playing bottom Congo. Ghana have failed to collect more than six points.

However, Appiah showed seriousness in picking his squad for the game on 12 November, calling up all the usual Black Stars.

He even recalled Mubarak Wakaso for the first time since he replaced Avram Grant after the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, while key player Asamoah Gyan also returned to the squad.

The Ayew brothers, Andre and Jordan, have been dropped and midfielder Thomas Partey suspended for the game because of two yellow cards.

Newcastle United midfielder Christian Atsu has also returned after recovering from an injury.

The Ghana squad was announced as follows:

Goalkeepers: Richard Ofori (Maritzburg, South Africa), Joseph Addo (Aduana Stars), Lawrence Ati Zigi (Sochaux, France)

Defenders: Harrison Afful (Columbus Crew, USA), Daniel Opare (Augsburg, Germany), Lumor Agbenyenu (Portimonense, Portugal), Abass Mohammed (Harrisburg City, USA), Nicholas Opoku (Club Africain, Tunisia), Kasim Nuhu Adams (Young Boys, Switzerland), Daniel Amartey (Leicester City, England)

Midfielders: Joseph Attamah (Istanbul Basaksehir, Turkey), Mubarak Wakaso (Alaves, Spain), Ebenezer Ofori (Stuttgart, Germany), Godfred Donsah (Bologna, Italy), Nasiru Mohammed (BK Hacken, Sweden), Patrick Twumasi (Astana FC, Kazakhstan), Nana Ampomah (Waasland-Beveren, Belgium), Christian Atsu (Newcastle United, England), Edwin Gyasi (Aalesund, Norway)
