Ahly's Meteb excited by new challenge at Saudi Arabia's Al-Taawoun

Emad Meteb will be free at the end of the season when his deal with Ahly and loan contract with Al-Taawoun expire

Ahly's veteran striker Emad Meteb said he was excited by his new challenge at Saudi side Al-Taawoun after joining from Egyptian champions Ahly on a six-month loan deal.

"Thanks God, I signed for Al-Taawwon. It's a new challenge for me and I'm praying to Allah to support me," the 34-year-old tweeted Wednesday.

"Special thanks to Al-Taawoun fans; I will meet their expectations, God willing."

Meteb joined Al-Taawoun in search of more regular football after warming the bench at Cairo giants Ahly, the club where he made his name after coming through their youth ranks more than 13 years ago.

He has fallen out of favour at his boyhood club since the re-appointment of coach Hossam El-Badry in August 2016; appearing for a few minutes in just 17 games and scoring just six goals in all competitions.

Meteb is unlikely to go back to Ahly, whom he led to a host of domestic and continental titles, when he ends his loan spell in Saudi Arabia as his contract with the Red Devils expires at the end of the season.

"After Meteb's loan ends, he will be totally free to move anywhere because he didn't renew his contract with Ahly," the club's football director Sayed Abdel-Hafiz told a radio station on Wednesday.

The three time African Cup of Nations winner, Meteb, will be playing at the new club alongside fellow countrymen veteran keeper Essam El-Hadary and talented winger Mostafa Fathi.

Al-Taawoun currently lie seventh in the Saudi league table with 20 points from 16 matches, 14 behind leaders Al-Hilal.
