Ahly-Zamalek Cairo derby: Who are the most tweeted-about players?
Ahram Online , Monday 8 Jan 2018

For good and wrong reasons, who are the most tweeted-about Ahly and Zamalek players throughout the last year?

The bitter cross-town rivals lock horns in the first Cairo derby of the season later on Monday, with fans of both sides engaging in typically heated discussions on micro-blogging website Twitter.

A few hours ahead of the game, sports management agency Presentation Sports, the official sponsors of the Egyptian Football Association, released a list of the most tweeted-about Ahly and Zamalek players from 6 January 2017 to 6 January 2018.

The list included 11 players, covering all positions.

Ahly's Sherif Ekramy came on top of the list as the most tweeted-about goalkeeper, followed by club teammates Saad Samir and Ahmed Fathi as well as Zamalek's Ali Gabr in defence.

In midfield, Ahly's controversial midfielder Saleh Gomaa was included, perhaps because of his repeated tantrums which prompted the Red Devils to impose hefty fines on him.

Ahly's in-form playmaker Abdallah El-Said and winger Walid Soliman as well as Zamalek's tireless Tarek Hamed were the other most tweeted-about players in midfield, with trio enjoying a fine year with their respective clubs.

Upfront, Zamalek's out-of-favour striker Bassem Morsi was included in the list, with his struggles to recapture his top form igniting debates over whether he deserves to be recalled to the Egyptian national team squad ahead of the World Cup.

Ahly's Moroccan striker Walid Azaro, who has received mix reviews since his summer arrival, and Zamalek's Congolese forward Kabongo Kasongo were the other players in attack.
