Cairo Runners is holding its first full marathon on Friday

"I received my package!" Enthusiastic participants in Cairo’s upcoming marathon are getting ready, posting photos of themselves on social media with t-shirts and tickets for the big run.

The event, organised by Cairo Runners, will take place on Friday morning at Cairo Festival City.

The annual half-marathon (21km) is undisputedly the jewel in the crown of the running community group’s activities, attracting thousands each year.

This year is special, marking as it does the group’s fifth anniversary, and a total of four half-marathons and over 100 weekly runs organised.

There will also, for the first time ever, be a full-length marathon (42km), as well as a new 1km para-race for athletes with impairments.

Enthusiasts who may not be able to manage the full and half-marathon have the option of completing a 10km run or a 3km family run.

Local band the Sharmoofers will be entertaining the crowds at the end of the races.

The first three marathon winners will receive monetary prizes. while a share of the revenues will also go to 500500 cancer hospital.

Cairo Runners take to the streets for runs each Friday morning, choosing different locations each week.

At the beginning of the initiative, the participants were around 70, but weekly runs now see around 2,500 participants, and the annual half-marathon attracts over 8,000.
