Libyan officials to hold fresh round of army unification talks in Cairo

Libyan military officers representingthe army of General Khalifa Haftar and the Sarraj government have agreed to hold another meeting soon to discuss the unification of the Libyan army, after the sixth round of talks on the subject concluded in Cairo this week.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday following the conclusion of their talks, the Libyan military officers agreed to have a new round of talks in the nearest possible time,to discuss the unification of the Libyan armed forces in order to make it capable of facing terrorism,illegal migration,organised crime,or any other threat to Libya's stability.

The statement added that the unification of the Libyan armed forces would be a “solid prelude”for a political settlement in the war-torn country.

The sixth round of meetings, which began lastFriday, were hosted by the Egyptian committee on Libyan affairs, which has hosted previous five rounds of meetings.

Egypt has been calling for the implementation of the Skhirat agreement, which wassigned in December 2015and calls on Libya’s rival governments in Tobruk and Tripoli to establish a national unity administration.
