Champions Ahly set a record of the most goals scored in one season in the Egyptian Premier League after beating Petrojet 2-1 on Sunday.

A first-half goal by defender Saad Samir and another after the break by striker Marwan Mohsen took Ahly's goal tally to 72, surpassing the 71 goals scored by Tersana in the 1963-64 season.

The Red Devils also set another record for most wins in a season after claiming their 27th victory.

Ahly, who secured the league title for the third time in a row with six matches to spare last month, had the upper hand against Petrojet who failed to secure a single win in their last seven league matches.

It took central defender Samir 22 minutes to score the opener with a firm header following an inviting cross from winger Walid Soliman.

Soliman also created the second for Mohsen in the second half, with his pass releasing the Egypt striker who sent a powerful shot that left the Petrojet keeper with no chance.

Goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy returned to Ahly's line up after a long absence but could not keep a clean sheet, as his slow reaction allowed Petrojet midfielder Amr Elnagdy to beat him with a close-range shot in the 78th minute.

With only two matches remaining before the end of the season, Ahly are top with 85 points, a massive 21 ahead of second-placed Ismaily. Petrojet lie 12thon 38 points.

Ahly need just two points from their remaining games to achieve the biggest point tally in the competition's history, which is currently held by rivals Zamalek, who collected 87 points in the 2014-15 season.
