Four police officers and one non-commissioned police officer accused of killing protesters in Sayeda Zeinab have been acquitted by the Cairo Criminal Court on Thursday.

The officers were facing charges of killing five protesters and intending to kill another six protesters. The incidents in question took place in front of the Sayeda Zeinab Police Station near downtown Cairo during 28-29 January.

On 28 January, known as the “Friday of Rage,” several police stations were stormed by protesters across the country. There were also several clashes between protesters and police officers at many police stations.

Throughout the 18 days of the uprising, approximately 840 protesters were killed, and thousands injured. Since Mubarak’s ouster on 11 February, the martyr’s families, along with revolutionaries, have demanded that their killers be put on trial and brought to justice.

Thursday’s sentence was the first ruling against suspects accused of killing protesters.
