Egypt's Al-Azhar denounces terror attack on Nigerian military base

Egypt's Al-Azhar condemneda terrorist attack that targeted a military base in the northeastern Nigerian village of Zari on Friday evening, killing 30 soldiers and wounded others.

Al-Azhar, the highest Islamic learning institution in Egypt and in the Sunni Muslim world, called on the international community to exert more efforts to halt bloodshed and to eliminate terrorist groups.

The statement also offered Al-Azhar’s condolences to the Nigerian president, government, people, and the families of the victims.

The attack was carried out by the Boko Haram terrorist organization.

Boko Haram has intensified attacks on military targets in recent months. The terrorist organization's insurgency, which is entering its ninth year, has left more than 20,000 people dead and displaced nearly 2.6 million Nigerians.
