Lebanese publishing house Dar Al-Saqi has announced it has acquired the rights to publish the newly discovered short stories collection by the late Egyptian Noble Laureate Naguib Mahfouz.

Al-Saqi said it signed a contract with the daughter of the late writer, Um Kulthum Naguib Mahfouz, who found the stories while searching her father's archives with culture journalist Mohamed Shoair.

The short stories collection will be published under the title Hams El-Nogoom (Whispering of the Stars) and will be released on his birthday, 11 December 2018.

The short stories were discovered by Shoair while he was working on a book that chronicles the publishing history of Mahfouz’s controversial novelAwlad Haretna (Children of Gebelawy).

While searching the archives, Shoair came across some the short stories published in Nisfeldunia magazine, issued by Al-Ahram, before thefailed assassination attempt on Mahfouz in 1994.

Shoair told Ahram Online that he found a file of 50 short stories entitled "For publishing 1994.”

Most of the stories were published in Nisfeldunia magazine and some were included in short stories collections he published later.

However, after reviewing Mahfouz’s bibliography, he and Um Kulthum Naguib Mahfouz discovered that 18 of the 50 stories were not published before.
