Egyptian swimmer Farida Osman won the bronze medal in the women’s 50m butterfly final at the 2019 World Swimming Championships in Gwangju after finishing third in the final with a time of 25.47 seconds on Saturday.

"Thank you for your messages of support. I'm very happy that I made you and Egypt proud of me," Osman said in a video message to her fans on her Facebook page.

Farida qualified for the final on Friday after finishing fifth in the semis with a time of 25.79 seconds.

Osman didn't start the 50m freestyle event early on Saturday as she probably wanted to be ready for the 50m butterfly final.

She was bidding for a new glory after she gave Egypt its first-ever medal at the swimming World Championships, winning bronze in Budapest two years ago in the same 50m butterfly event.

Osman is Egypt's most decorated swimmer, thanks to her rapid progress that made her a popular figure in a country that usually reserves its acclaim for football players.

Having started swimming at the age of four, Osman represented Egypt at the 2011 FINA junior World Championships before becoming an Olympian at only 17 when she was invited to the 2012 London Olympic Games.

She was seventh at the World Championships in 2013 and, two years later, finished fifth in the 50m butterfly at the World Championship after clocking 25.78 seconds, an African record at the time. She still holds the African record with a 25.39 seconds finish in Budapest.

In the 50m butterfly, Farida Osman won the bronze medal after finishing third in the final with a time of 25.47 seconds on Saturday. Osman reached the final after finishing fifth in the semis with a time of 25.79 seconds on Friday. Earlier in the day she won her preliminary round heat with a time of 25.71 seconds to finish third in the overrall heats ranking.

In the 1500m freestyle, Ahmed Akram failed to reach the final after finishing 19th in the heats with a time of 15:13.25 minutes on Saturday.

In the 50m backstroke, Mohamed Samy finished 16th om the semi-final with a time of 25.16 seconds on Saturday. Earlier in the day he qualified for the semi-finals after finishing seventh in the heats with a time of 24.95 seconds.

In the men's 50m freestyle, Ali Khalafalla finished 13th in the semi-final with a time of 21.98 on Friday. Earlier in the day he finished 11th in the overrall heats ranking with a time of 22.04 seconds.

In the women's 100m freestyle, Osman failed to reach the semifinals after finishing 28th in the overall heats rankings with a time of 54.93 seconds on Thursday.

In the men's 100m freestyle, Ali Khalafalla finished first in his heat and 26th in the overall heat rankings with a time of 49.22 seconds on Wednesday.

In the men's 200m medley, Mohamed Samy finished fifth in his heat and 32nd in the overall heat rankings with 2:02.57 minutes on Wednesday.

In the men's 50m breaststroke, Youssef El-Kamash finished 24th in the heats with 27.62 seconds on Tuesday.

In the men's 800m freestyle, Marwan El-Kamash finished 26th in the heats with 8:07.97 minutes on Tuesday.

In the men's 100m backstroke, Samy finished 39th in the heats with 55.87 seconds on Monday.

In the men's 50m butterfly, Abdel-Rahman Sameh qualified for the semifinals after finishing 15th in the heats with a time of 23.54 seconds on Sunday. Later on Sunday, he recorded 23.68 in the semis to finish in 16th place.

In the men's 100m breaststroke, Youssef El-Kamash finished 31st in the heats with a time of 1:01.24 minutes on Sunday.

In the women's 100m butterfly, Osman ranked 17th in the heats with 58.43 seconds on Sunday.

In the men's 400m freestyle, Marwan El-Kamash finished 23rd in the heats with a time of 3:52.21 minutes on Sunday.
