The Egyptian Ministry of Health announced on Sunday the implementation of the new comprehensive health insurance system in the coastal governorate of Port Said to offer better health services to citizens.

The governorate will be the first to benefit from the new system through seven general hospitals, four medical centres and 25 healthcare units.

The pilot stage of the new system was implemented in Port Said on 1 July.

The new system will cover all governorates by 2032.

Among the medical services to be provided in the new system are open-heart surgery, bone-marrow transplants, kidney and liver specialities, neurology and micro-surgery.

The new system’s second phase will start from 2021 to 2023 in Luxor, Matrouh, Red Sea, Qena and Aswan.

The third phase, from 2024 to 2026, will be in Alexandria, Beheira, Damietta, Sohag and Kafr El-Sheikh.

The fourth, from 2026 to 2028, will be in the Beni Sweif, Assiut, Minya, New Valley and Fayoum governorates.

The fifth phase will start from 2029 to 2030 in Daqahliya, Sharqiya, Gharbiya and Menoufiya.

The last phase will be from 2031 to 2032 in Cairo, Giza and Qalioubiya.

In his speech addressing the sixth National Youth Conference held at Cairo University on July 2018, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi announced that the universal healthcare insurance system would be implemented in Egypt.

After he was elected for a second term in 2018, the president declared that health and education reform will be at the top of his agenda.
