The Alexandria prosecution has ordered on Monday the four-day detention of Adel Shakal, a well-known supporter of Ittihad of Alexandria football club, over a video posted online where Shakal is seen dancing with machetes at a traditional Egyptian wedding.

Two other individuals have been detained alongside Shakal for four days pending investigation into charges of weapons possession, show of force, and thuggery.

The defendants have said that they were dancing with weapons in a celebratory manner at a wedding ceremony in Sidi Gaber, as is customary at many traditional weddings in Egyptian working-class neighbourhoods.

The defendants denied the accusation of thuggery and said that their dancing was not intended as a show of force.

Shakal has frequently ignited controversy on social media with his use of inflammatory language and behaviour that many have described as inappropriate.

Shakal frequently appears in the stands at national football team games.
