Russia ready to mediate between Egypt and Ethiopia on dam issue: Russian envoy to Middle East
Egypt's FM had said earlier that Russia could help resolve the stalemate in the dam negotiations
Russia is ready to mediate between Egypt and Ethiopia on the Grand Renaissance Ethiopian Dam issue, Russian envoy to the Middle East Mikhail Bogdanov told journalists in Sochi on the sideline of the Russia-Africa summit on Wednesday.
"If we are asked to mediate, we are ready to do it. We have got excellent relations with Addis Ababa and Cairo. We discuss this issue more than once and if our mediation is needed, we are ready to do it," Bogdanov said, according to Russia Today.
Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Soukry told the Russian news agency Sputnik in an interview on Monday that Russia could help resolve the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam problem after the failure of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia to reach an agreement on the dam's filling and operation.
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi is expected to meet with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Moscow on Thursday to discuss the dam issue.
