Head of Cairo Appeal Court reveals he asked judge presiding over NGO trial to remove himself from case, cites a conflict of interest
Judge Abdel-Moez Ibrahim, head of the Cairo Appeal Court, revealed on Thursday that he asked the judge presiding over the NGO case to step down.
In an interview on state TV's Channel One, Ibrahim admitted to asking Judge Mohamed Shokri to recuse himself from the case. According to Ibrahim, there was a conflict of interest, as Shokri's son works in a legal consultancy office, which deals with the US embassy.
The case has now been adjourned to 26 April. As a result, the verdict will not be reached this year, since the judicial year ends on 30 June.
Ibrahim also disclosed that the suspects were released on a LE2 million bail.
On Tuesday, the three judges in charge of handling the recent government case against a number of US and Egyptian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government-funded organisations announced their withdrawal from the case "for reasons of discomfort," without giving further explanation.
