The Arab League will hold an extraordinary meeting on Saturday to discuss a Middle East peace plan that the Trump administration is expected to come out with on Tuesday evening, the Arab League assistant secretary-general told reporters.

The Palestinian Authority's permanent representative at the Arab League submitted the request for a ministerial-level meeting with the aim of hearing Palestinian President Mamoud Abbas on the so-called "Deal of the Century," said Arab League Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki.

The Palestinian leadership, which was not invited to the talks on the peace plan in Washington, has rejected Trump's initiative and said no peace deal could be made without "the approval of the Palestinian people and the Palestinian leadership."

Tensions between the Palestinians and Trump intensified following his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and his administration's announcement last year that it no longer regards Israeli settlements on West Bank land as a breach of international law.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he will announce his long-delayed Middle East peace proposal on Tuesday and that he believes the Palestinians will eventually go along with it despite their refusal to engage on the subject.

Thousands of Palestinians demonstrated in Gaza City against Trump's proposal on Tuesday, stepping on posters of the US president.
