'Aga's House' wins big as 4th Aswan Int'l Women’s Film Festival concludes

Abstract: 31 films from 29 countries competed for various awards at the AIWFF, which focuses on women’s issues


'Aga's House' won big at the fourth edition of the Aswan International Women’s Film Festival (AIWFF), which ended on Saturday after a week-long run attended by dozens of Egyptian and international filmmakers and critics.



The comedy drama 'Aga's House' was named Best Feature Film, its maker Lendita Zeqiraj won Best Director, and its star Rozafa Celaj was named Best Actress. The film also won the jury's critics award.



'Aga's House', produced by Kosovo, Albania, Croatia and France, tells the story of a young boy living in a house of women who must hurry to save a woman who is teaching him Serbian, so he can continue searching for his missing father.



Meanwhile, American-Chinese production 'Confucian Dream' was named best documentary and Indian-French-British production 'Bombay Rose' won best animation script.



Dutchman Marwan Kenzari won the Best Actor award for his role in 'Instinct', while the jury awarded its special prize to 'The Names of the Flowers', which saw its African premiere in Aswan.



Amal Ramsis' 'You Come from Far Away' as shared the Euro-Mediterranean award with Marianne Khoury's 'Let's Talk'.



In the short film category, Oscar-nominated animation film 'Daughter' was named best film, Injy Ebaid was named best director for 'Pacific', and the jury award went to 'Sheep, Wolf and a Cup of Tea'.



The jury gave a special mention to Brazilian feature film 'To Us, Lonely Ones' and Egyptian documentary 'Heart, You Deserve That'.



In addition to film screenings and competitions, the festival, which focuses on women’s issues and features women in the film industry, involved a series of seminars and workshops. The festival also honoured a number of women in the film industry including producer Nahed Farid Shawky and editors Rahmah Montaser and Laila El-Sayes.



Under the helm of president Mohamed Abdel-Khaleq, 31 films from 29 countries competed in the AIWFF’s various categories, with the awards presented by the Aswan governor and a number of Egyptian cinema professionals.
