The country has halted air traffic until 31 March as part of measures to stem the spread of the coronavirus
Egypt's flagship carrier EgyptAir operated earlier on Thursday its last international flight before a halt to air traffic over coronavirus concerns came into effect, the national airline said.
The Boeing B777-300 ER plane took off from Cairo International Airport at noon bound for Tokyo and carrying 200 passengers, EgyptAir said in a statement on Thursday.
Another 33 international flights were operated earlier on the day to bring home Egyptian nationals from cities including Toronto, Riyadh, Dubai, London, New York, Milan, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Moscow, a company spokesman told Ahram Online.
Earlier this week, Egypt decided to suspend all international flights to and from the country as of Thursday noon until 31 March to confront the spread of the coronavirus.
Domestic and freight flights, however, are proceeding normally.
Other measures taken by the country include closing schools and universities, shutting malls and restaurants, halting sports events and imposing restrictions on mass prayers.
Egypt has so far confirmed 210 coronavirus cases and registered six deaths, including three foreigners.
