Egyptian Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhi held a meeting on Saturday with the Egyptian Football Association’s (EFA) board members to discuss the future of the domestic football league after the coronavirus outbreak.

The EFA suspended all football activities on 15 March over the pandemic, but has not released an official decision regarding the future of the league.

"The target of today's meeting is to improve the Football Association's readiness for the league resumptions," Sobhi told reporters after the meeting.

"We also met to determine the number of stadiums that would host the domestic games if the government decides to resume the football activities anytime."

"The decision to resume football activities is in the hands of the Egyptian government due to the coronavirus."

"But it's now difficult to decide resuming football activities," the Egyptian sports minister said.

The initial suspension of football in March was set to last two weeks, but has subsequently been extended. Clubs have also halted training sessions.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country has reached 5,895, with 406 deaths.

Schools, universities, mosques and churches have been shuttered as part of a host of public safety measures introduced to halt the spread of the disease. A 9pm curfew has also been put in place.
