Deputy editor-in-chief of Egyptian state newspaper Al-Goumhuria dies of coronavirus

The deputy editor-in-chief of the state-owned daily Al-Goumhuria, Fathi El-Sarawy, has died of coronavirus, several news agencies reported on Thursday.

The journalist is the second from Al-Goumhuria to die from the virus; Magdy Ali, who worked in the institution’s advertising agency, passed away on Wednesday, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.

According to a report by the press syndicate on Wednesday, a total of nine journalists and syndicate members have contracted the coronavirus.

Syndicate head Diaa Rashwan said that of those nine, four have fully recovered, while two have passed away.

Mahmoud Riad, a journalist at Al-Khamis newspaper, died of the disease on 27 April, while on 18 May, journalist Mohy El-Din Al-Sayed passed away.

Egypt has so far reported a total of 20,793 coronavirus cases and 845 deaths.
