Egypt's National Elections Authority issues final list of senate election candidates

The Senate will be comprised of 300 seats, one third of which will be elected via the individual candidacy system, another third through the closed party list system, and the final third to be appointed by the president


Egypt’s National Elections Authority (NEA) issued on Monday the final list of candidates for the Senate elections, which are scheduled for early August, along with their electoral symbols.

The final list was released after the NEA received the rulings issued by administrative court in favour of or against some candidates after their appeals, the NEA said in a statement.

The list consists of 787 candidates, including 12 from Aswan, 28 from Assiut, 67 from Alexandria, nine from Ismailia, 25 from Luxor, 41 from Beheira, 73 from Giza, 43 from Daqahliya, 13 from Suez, 47 from Sharqiya, 30 from Gharbiya, 10 from Fayoum, 98 from Cairo and 10 from the Red Sea governorate.

It also includes 60 candidates from Qalioubiya, 30 from Menoufiya, 27 from Minya, two from New Valley, 23 from Beni Suef, eight from Port Said, five from South Sinai, 17 from Damietta, 35 from Sohag, seven from North Sinai, 42 from Qena, 20 from Kafr El-Sheikh and five candidates from Marsa Matrouh.

There is currently a two-week election campaign that started on 20 July and will end on 7 August.

The polls will kick off for Egyptians abroad on 8-9 August, and will start in Egypt on 11-12 August.

The polls results will be announced on 19 August.

The Senate will be comprised of 300 seats, one third of which will be elected via the individual candidacy system, another third through the closed party list system, and the final third to be appointed by the president.

Senate members' tenure is set at five years.
