Egypt has allocated EGP 122 billion for higher education and EGP 60.4 billion for scientific research in the current year's budget, Finance Minister Mohamed Maait said in a statement on Saturday.

Maait added that the country designated EGP 3.8 billion in the 2020-2021 budget for establishing and developing technological and private universities inorder to make use of technological systems in various aspects of life given the state's plan to move gradually to what he called "Digital Egypt".

The minister noted that EGP 1.5 billion has been designated for the quality incentives in universities, educational institutes and research bodies as part of efforts to improve the incomes of university staff.

The budget supports government developmental plans including those related to university education "given its direct impact on improving the human capabilities in Egypt and [its] ability to compete in the regional and international market," he pointed out.
