Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker received on Thursday Michael Li, Huawei's regional corporate head, to discuss the gradual transformation of the Egyptian electricity network to a smart grid.

A statement by the ministry said the meeting is part of the energy sector’s efforts to develop its projects according to the latest technologies.

During the meeting, Shaker emphasised the strong cooperation between Egypt and China in multiple fields. He referred to the various projects and programmes Egypt’s electricity sector implementated in cooperation with China to benefit from its expertise and technology.

Huawei is involved in various local projects, including developing Egypt’s under-construction Administrative Capital as an advanced model of digital cities. The Chinese company provides various forms of assistance to the local market to optimise the use of information technology and communications to serve economic and development goals.

Shaker referred to the electricity sector's efforts to improve its services, including production, transportation, and distribution, explaining the future vision of the Egyptian electricity sector, which is based on the gradual transformation of the current network to a smart grid that helps to absorb the large quantities generated.

In November 2019, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said at the G20 Compact with Africa meetings in Berlin that Egypt has spent around $60 billion to link its electricity sector to other countries and continents.

The statement added that Wael El-Sobky, head of the electricity sector in Egypt, reviewed at the meeting how to move from the traditional network to the smart grid, how to deal with the challenges and problems facing the sector, and the role of modern technology provided by Huawei, such as artificial intelligence, Big Data, Cloud, IOT, TX, and other distinguished solutions.

Michael lauded the rapid and remarkable development of the projects implemented by the ministry, and building a strong infrastructure in addition to the smart grid that supports the digital transformation adopted by the Egyptian government.

He presented a report on the results of Huawei’s global business in the first half of 2020, which explained that despite the challenges the company faces, it was able to achieve revenue growth, stressing that the negative effects of global challenges could not threaten the company's stability.
