Egypt’s Cairo Criminal Court sentenced on Wednesday the former head of the Old Cairo district to 10 years in prison after he was found guilty in a 2019 bribery case.

The court sentenced another defendant to three years in prison in the same case.

The sentences are not final and can still be appealed by the defendants.

Last year, Egypt's Administrative Control Authority (ACA) announced the arrest of the head of the Old Cairo district, located in the south part of the capital, for receiving a bribe.

He was arrested for receiving EGP 1 million, out of an agreed upon EGP 2 million, from a demolition contractor working with the district in return for disbursing funds owed to the contractor by the district.

The ACA, the state body responsible for enforcing laws and regulations within state bodies, has been waging a national campaign against corruption in recent years.
