The Egyptian prosecution is investigating the death of a 24-year-old woman whose body was found on a street in Cairo’s Maadi suburb on Tuesday evening.

The prosecution's statement on Thursday pointed out investigations are ongoing in the robbery and murder case after police had arrested on Wednesday two men who are believed to be the perpetrators.

The young woman died on Tuesday evening when she lost her balance after her head bumped into a parked car as two men driving a microbus snatched her bag, the statement cited an eyewitness as saying.

The incident has stirred public uproar since it was initially reported in the media as manslaughter following sexual assault and a robbery attempt.

The eyewitness told the prosecution that the victim was seen in the company of another female near a parked car when the two men in a white microbus with a smudged rear plate approached them.

Without stopping the microbus, one of the men forcefully snatched the victim's backpack. This was when the victim lost her balance and her head hit the hood of the nearby car before both men fled with the bag, the eyewitness added, noting that the accompanying female had stayed away for fear of the accident.

An ambulance arrived at the scene half an hour after the woman was hit, but she had already died, the eyewitness added.

The prosecution said on Thursday blood was found at the crime scene and was sent to forensics for analysis.

The prosecution added it obtained five videos from surveillance cameras on the scene of the incident, stating that the footage showed the microbus was driven at a very high speed.

The woman who was accompanying the victim will be called for testimony, the statement pointed out, adding that the General Directorate of Forensic Evidence Investigation of the Ministry of Interior was assigned to analyse the actions committed during the incident based on the obtained footage.
