Egypt’s Minister of State for Emigration Nabila Makram has called on Egyptians abroad to participate in the parliamentary elections, the polls for which opened on Monday and will run for two days.

In a video conference where Makram addressed enquiries from Egyptian expats about the elections, the minister stressed that voting in the election would contribute to building the state and supporting the political process.

The minister also announced that the ministry has established an operation room to follow up on the election process abroad.

She added that a hotline has been set up to respond to any queries from citizens, and that the ministry has launched a campaign to inform expats about the date and procedures for voting from abroad.

The Ministry of Emigration also released on Facebook an infographic informing expats how they can participate in the elections.

Egypt’s National Election Authority (NEA) has set up 140 polling stations in the country’s embassies and consulates in 124 countries for the first phase of the elections.

Egyptian voters abroad will be able to print their ballot papers on Monday and Tuesday by entering their registration code on the NEA website.

Voting is scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Voters will select several candidates from the individual list system depending on their electoral district, and others from the closed list system.

Both ballot papers must be placed in envelopes with a voter declaration, photocopies of the voter’s national ID card or passport, and residency documents. The papers must be sent via express mail to the electoral committee of their country’s diplomatic mission.
