'I’ve lived this reality': Portuguese director on her film 'Listen' at El Gouna festival

The film portrays the battle of a Portuguese immigrant couple with three children living in London, struggling to keep a decent life and fighting strict laws


Yesterday at the Festival Plaza, El Gouna Film Festival celebrated the MENA premiere of the film Listen with Portuguese director Ana Rocha De Sousa and actors Lúcia Moniz and Kem Hassan walking the red carpet.

The film portrays the battle of a Portuguese immigrant couple with three children living in London, struggling to keep a decent life and fighting strict laws where the social services are concerned for the safety of the children and then decide to take them away from the parents.

The film won numerous awards at the 77th Venice International Film Festival including the Lion of the Future Award for a Debut Film, Special Orizzonti Jury Prize (Best Director),Luigi De Laurentiis Award (Best Director), Bisato d'Oro (Best Film) andSorriso Diverso Venezia Award (Best Film in a Foreign Language).

Following the screening, GFF's Artistic Director Amir Ramses introduced the cast of the film on stage and expressed his happiness for screening Listen in its MENA premiere as well as competing in the festival's official competition.

Ana Rocha De Sousa expressed her happiness in that her film’s MENA premiere was held at GFF adding that “the idea of the film is based on reality, and doesn’t only exist on screen. I’ve lived this reality and I hope that my message reaches everyone in the world.”

The fourth edition of El Gouna Film Festival takes place between 23 and 31 October.
