The electoral list led by Egypt’s pro-government Mostaqbal Watan Party has won the majority of the vote in the second phase of the country’s House of Representatives elections in a race that was heavily fielded by the party.

The turnout in the second stage was 29.5 percent, with 9.2 million casting their ballots out of 31 million eligible voters, National Elections Authority (NEA) head Lashin Ibrahim said.

Elections in this stage were held earlier in November in Cairo,Qalioubiya,Daqahliya,Menoufiya, Gharbiya,KafrEl-Sheikh,Sharqiya, Damietta, Port Said, Ismailia, Suez, North Sinai and South Sinai.

Wearing facemasks and adhering to social distancing were among the mandatory safety measures implemented at polling stations.

As many as 1,200 judges have supervised the elections across governorates, Ibrahim said, thanking also police forces for securing the voting process.



Some 56 local organisations, 14 foreign and international ones, three rights councils, 51 local media platforms and 153 international media platforms have followed up on the second stage first round, Ibrahim added.



Around 2,083 candidates contested 141 seats for the individual system, Ibrahim said after the death of two candidates. 142 seats were up for the grabs under the electoral list system, which was swept in majority by the electroal list led by Mostaqbal Watan.


The NEA received some complaints during election days, but none affected the voting process, Ibrahim added.



Ibrahim also referred to “only one” violation of election campaigning ruls, as a candidate hung his picture in Ahmed Maher Teaching Hospital in Cairo. The incident was referred to the public prosecution, Ibrahim affirmed.



Ibrahim added that electoral campaigning can resume for the second stage run-off starting 16 November until 2 December.



He added that the NEA will receive appeals on election results on 17 November.



The NEA head praised Egyptians’ keenness to participate in House of Representative elections and the Senate vote held earlier this year, despite the coronavirus crisis. He also urged citizens to participate in the run-offs, warning against “rumours and lies” questioning development and progress in Egypt.



“Come to elections. Do not listen to the enemies of the nation, those who disseminate rumours, and citizens using the weapon of lies to mislead people’s minds,” he stated.



The run-off for this stage will take place 5-7 December for expats, while at home elections will be held on 7-8 December..
