Court extends detention of two suspects in Fairmont rape case for another 45 days

Two other suspects fled Lebanon and the whereabouts of these two remaining suspects is still unknown



A New Cairo court decided on Saturday to renew the detentionfortwoof itssuspects for another 45 days pendingmoreinvestigations into the gang rape case, commonly known in the media as “The Fairmont rape case” which goes back to 2014.

The two suspects were arrestedbetweenlate August and September,despiteonesuspect’s attemptto flee the country.

Three other suspects in the same case were arrested by Egyptian police in September afterthey were arrested in Beirutin AugustandInterpolreturnedthemto thecountry.

The five suspects are currently facing a number of allegations includingcontributing tothegang rape of a young lady at the Fairmont Nile City Hotel in Cairo in February 2014.

The case came to surface inthesummerof2020 through ananonymousaccount on Instagram before the National Council of Womenofficiallyreportedit to thepublicprosecution on behalf of the victim.

Two other suspects in the case fled Lebanon before they could be apprehended, according totheLebaneseauthorities. Thewhereabouts of the two remaining suspectsisstillunknown.

According to theinvestigation,the public prosecution found outthat sevensuspects in the case decided to flee the country for fear of arrest after their photos and personal details were shared onseveralsocial media accounts before an official complaint reachedthe prosecution on 4 August 2020.

The prosecution revealed that the suspected divided themselves in to three groups, the first group departed Cairo international airport on 27 July while the second group departed on 28 July then the third and the last grouplefton 29 July.

According to theprosecution,the suspects participated in raping a girlas a groupandwrotetheir names on her body at the Fairmont hotel and that other suspects participated in the crime by providing them with the crime scene and other tools used in the crime.
