Egypt has condemned a terrorist attack on Salahudin governorate, north of the Iraqi capital, which killed and injured many civilians and police personnel.

A roadside bomb exploded near the Makhoul mountains in the governorate when a vehicle carrying civilians was passing by, according to AFP.

Police forces and Popular Mobilisation Troops, a coalition of paramilitary forces, approached the scene to rescue the civilians but were ambushed and shot at by militants.

At least 10 people were killed in the attack, which prompted the government to declare three days of mourning. The terrorist group Daesh has claimed responsibility for the attack.

“The government and people of Egypt extend their condolences to the government and people of brotherly Iraq and wish a speedy recovery for the injured,” a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry read.

The statement added that Egypt “stresses profound condemnation of these terrorist acts that target unarmed civilians and security forces and are devoid of any humanity or religious values.”

“Egypt renews its call for the necessity of concerted international efforts to eradicate the scourge of hateful terrorism whatever its sources or motives.”

“Egypt also affirms its solidarity with brotherly Iraq in the measures it takes to combat terrorism in order to protect its security and preserve its stability.”

Daesh has claimed numerous terrorist attacks in Iraq, especially those targeting security forces.
