The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, in cooperation with the General Egyptian Treasury and Mint Authority, is celebrating the 1,050th anniversary of Cairo by launching a collection of medals engraved with scenes depicting the monuments and traditions of historic Cairo.

The General Treasury and Mint Authority has issued a set of commemorative medals celebrating historic Cairo, selected as the Capital of Islamic Culture and Civilisation in 2020.

The medals bear scenes of Islamic monuments and traditions in the city's glorious era. The mosques of Al-Azhar, Al-Aqmar, Mohamed Ali and the Imam Al-Shafei Dome are engraved on some medals.

Minarets and domes are also depicted as a symbol of the city’s architecture. There is a medallion bearing the image of the Saka, the workman who distributed water on historic Cairo’s houses.
