Famous Palestinian poet Mourid Barghouti died on Sunday 14 February at the age of 76.

Barghouti, who is known for being a strong advocate for the Palestinian cause, was born in Ramallah on the West Bank in 1944.

He came to Cairo in 1963 to study English literature at Cairo University and graduated in 1967, after which he couldn’t go back to Ramallah for 30 years.

His return to Ramallah inspired his autobiographical novel Ra'aytu Ram Allah (I Saw Ramallah), which was later translated to English by his late wife, Egyptian renowned novelist Ahdaf Soueif.

Correction: This piece was updated to correct that “I saw Ramallah” was translated by Ahdaf Soueif and not Radwa Ashour
