Egypt launched a new mobile application "MOP Stations" that guides motorists to the location of the nearest natural gas fuelling stations and centres. The app is part of the country's efforts to convert car engines to run on natural gas, Minister of Petroleum Tarek El-Molla announced on Monday.

The app, which is still in an experimental phase, is part of a presidential initiative launched in July to encourage owners of private cars, microbuses, and taxis to convert their vehicles to run on natural gas instead of, or alongside, gasoline.



The presidential initiative aims to preserve the environment and make use of the country's recently discovered abundant natural gas wealth.



It also aims to reduce fuel imports, decrease pollution from harmful emissions, ensure the safety of drivers and passengers, and tap into the potential of under-exploited auto factories.



The new Android app also informs users about the services provided by natural gas conversion centres, said El-Molla.



The app's registration page is still under construction.



The state is planning to convert tens of thousands of old vehicles to run on natural gas and replace thousands of rickety cars with new bi-fuel system models.



In January, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi inaugurated the country’s first vehicle fuel system conversion exhibition -- dubbed Go Green -- showcasing technologies for converting vehicles to run on natural gas.
