After two cancelled editions, Egyptian National Film Festival kicks off without public screenings
Films are not open for the public, with screenings being attended by jury members only.
Following two cancellations of the Egyptian National Film Festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event finally kicked off its 23rd edition on Tuesday.
The pandemic has also affected the festival's format this year, as films are not open for the public with screenings being attended by jury members only.
Due to the cancellation of the two previous editions, the festival does not limit the entries to films produced in 2020. Works produced in 2018 and 2019 were also accepted, leading to over 170 submissions.
The chosen films will compete for the Best Film Award Jury prize and an award for the first work of a director in each section: documentary films up to 15 minutes, documentary films more than 15 minutes, short films less than 60 minutes, and animation films less than 60 minutes.
The winners will be announced by the jury on 23 March during an official ceremony taking place at the Cairo Opera House.
Sponsored by the Cultural Development Fund, in its 23rd edition, the festival is supervised by prominent critic Kamal Ramzy, who is succeeding the renowned Egyptian director Samir Saif, who passed away in December 2019.
