Veteran Egyptian journalist Makram Mohamed Ahmeddied on Thursday at the age of 86 after a lengthy battle with illness.
Ahmed had served as head of the Journalists Syndicate for five terms as well as the secretary-general of the Union of Arab Journalists.
He was the first person to be appointed to head the Supreme Council for Media Regulation upon its formation in 2017.
Ahmed was born in Menoufiya in 1935.
He earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the Faculty of Arts at Cairo University in 1957 before taking up journalism.
Ahmed started his career as a journalist in the state-owned Al-Akhbar newspaper.
He later served as the director of the Al-Ahram bureau in Damascus.
In 1967, he worked as a military correspondent in Yemen.
The late journalist served in different positions in Al-Ahram newspaper until he was appointed as deputy editor-in-chief, and then managing editor.
He was also appointed as chairman of the state-owned Dar Al-Hilal publication organisation and editor-in-chief of Al-Musawar magazine.
