Explainer: Egypt's set of coronavirus precautionary measures enforced from 6 to 21 May

Egypt's cabinet released on Wednesday a list of strictprecautionarymeasures due to the spike in coronavirus infections in the country.

The new measures, meant to curb the spread of the virus during the third wave, are takingeffect from 6 to 21 May, including during the Eid El-Fitr holiday,marked from 12 to 16 May. The measures are subject for renewal or cancellation upon a cabinet decision at the end of the targeted period.

These are the procedures running through 21 May:


Shops, coffee shops, restaurants, malls, movie theatres, and gyms are closed from 9pm to 6am.

Fines for violating venues are set at EGP 4,000. In case of serving shisha (water pipe), the shop will be closed on the spot for one month.

Parks and public beaches nationwide are shut down.

However, private beaches, coffee shops, and restaurants in hotels countrywide are exempted from the newly-imposed decision, while abiding by the 50 percent occupancy regulation.

Pharmacies, bakeries, and supermarkets are allowed to open around the clock.

Delivery services of restaurants are allowed past 9pm.

All public gatherings, festive events, conferences, and mass activities are banned nationwide during the two-week duration.

Eid prayers can be performed – with no children allowed – in the mosques that have been previously authorised to host Friday prayers, and with the same precautions set for the weekly sermon.

No restrictions are imposed on the movement of citizens within or between governorates during the two-week period.

However, during the five-day Eid vacation, the movement of trip and group buses between governorates is not allowed, with the exclusion of private cars.

Citizens are due to pay an EGP 50 fine for not wearing face masks in public closed places and public transport vehicles.
