The AOI will co-manufacture laptops and tablets in partnership with Talal Abu Ghazaleh Organisation

Egypt's Arab Organisation for Industrialisation (AOI) inaugurated on Wednesday production lines for co-manufacturing laptops and tablets in partnership with the privately-owned Talal Abu Ghazaleh Organisation.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Communications and Information Technology Minister Amr Talaat, Trade and Industry Minister Nevine Gamea, Chairman of the state-owned AOI Abdel-Moniem El-Toras, and Chairman of the Jordan-based Abu Ghazaleh organisation.

The move is a "successful" model for integration between the public and private sectors as part of the presidential initiative to expand on the local manufacturing of electronic devices, Talaat said at the ceremony.

Egypt targets becoming a regional hub for manufacturing and designing electronic devices, he added.

The project is a "fundamental" pillar to feed the Egyptian market with advanced electronic devices and export products to regional and global markets as well, Gamea said.

She stressed the importance of boosting partnerships with international corporations to localise advanced industrial technologies.

El-Toras said the project will reduce imports of electronic devices needed for the country's educational system.

Egypt has been pushing forward with efforts to expand reliance on e-learning. Such endeavours have been intensified with the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, because of which a hybrid learning system of online and in-person classes was adopted in Egyptian schools and universities to lessen crowding to contain the deadly virus.

President El-Sisi instructed the government to focus on e-learning, ordering an expansion in the remote learning system.
