Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayyeb said on Sunday that religious scholars are playing an important and effective role to serve tolerance and coexistence among people.

His remarks came in a meeting with a delegation led by Secretary General of the Anglican Consultative Council Josiah Idowu-Fearon; Bishop Mounir Hanna of the Episcopal Church in Egypt, North Africa, and the Horn of Africa; and the new Archbishop of Alexandria Samy Fawzy.

El-Tayyeb said that Al-Azhar is dealing with the tolerance and coexistence file with patience and wisdom in order to support world peace and entrench human fraternity.

The delegation hailed El-Tayyeb’s international efforts in terms of dialogue and human fraternity among followers of different religions.

It also hailed the religious discourse of Al-Azhar that is based on accepting difference and diversity, noting that religions are innocent and free from terrorism and extremism.

El-Tayyeb and Pope Francis of the Catholic Church signed an interfaith and intercultural landmark document dubbed the ‘Document of Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together’ early in 2019.

Marking the anniversary of the document signing this year, El-Tayyeb called on the world to join the document to support its aim of achieving fraternity, freedom, equality, and justice.
