The winners of a competition to photograph the mosques and shrines of Andalusian sheikhs who lived and died in Alexandria, which took place in May 2021, were announced on 28 June.

The competition was organized by The Cervantes Institute in Alexandria, in cooperation with the Camera Club of the Alexandria Atelier.

The winners of the competition are: Mohamed Khaled, Ahmed Al-Attar and Marwan Alaa. The winners will receive a scholarship to study Spanish at the Cervantes Institute in Alexandria until 31 August 2021.

The participants in this competition took pictures of the mosques of five Andalusian sheikhs: Abu El-Abbas El-Morsy, Sidi Yakout El-Aarsh, Abu Bakr El-Tartushi, Mohamed El-Shatby, and Sidi Gaber El-Ansari.

Members of the prestigious jury committee that announced the winners were Director of the Cervantes Institutes in Egypt Javier Ruiz Sierra, Professor of History and Islamic Civilisation at the Faculty of Arts in Alexandria University Ibrahim Salama, Director of the Camera Club at Alexandria Atelier Mohamed Fawzy Ali as well as Secretary of the Jury from Cervantes Institute in Alexandria Safaa Ragab.

This competition is part of a series of cultural activities organised by the Cervantes Institute in Alexandria, which seeks to shed light on Andalusian history.

The winning photos will be displayed in an online exhibition in the days to come.
